The Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain is presenting an exhibition entitled: Interdit au public, an artistic project by Alain Guiraudie at the Galerie Valois. He presents it as follows:
“I have a great curiosity for construction projects, for building sites. But they are always closed to the public. I always get kicked out as soon as I try to take a look.
So when the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain asked me to take photos on the construction site of its future spaces on the Place du Palais-Royal, I jumped at the chance. It was a chance for me to photograph the work, the trades, and to get a closer look at how buildings are constructed.
So I found myself in this large, enclosed space, forbidden to the outside world, a large, modern cavern, without any hustle and bustle, where people work, wander, level, smooth, and drill quietly. I was even surprised to see so many workers working alone, each in their own corner.
Even after spending a few mornings there I still could not understand anything about how buildings are constructed. In fact, every time I returned to the site, I had the impression that nothing had changed, and yet I always found new motifs to photograph. All of this remained very mysterious to me. Instead, I let myself be drawn to the lights and colors of the place, to the bodies and figures that populated it, to the movements and circulation.”
