Festival de la Photo Documentaire de Sète : Laurent Elie Badessi : The Age of Innocence

Preview

The 14th Edition of Festival de la Photographie Documentaire – Images Singulières in Sète presents the exhibition “The Age of Innocence” at the Centre Photographique Documentaire (Sète).
“What do you like about guns? “. Between aesthetic pleasure, feeling of power, security and protection, the answers of the children questioned – which we can read next to each picture – allow us to understand all the ambivalence of this culture of the gun which has today become an inseparable part of the United States history.
With “The Age of Innocence”, Laurent Elie Badessi explores the affective relationship that binds a child to his weapon. For some, protecting oneself means living with these weapons, for others, their disappearance would be reassuring. Some are artificial, others real: the confusion is palpable between game and reality, but the artist carefully avoids any unwelcome judgment, and any frontal opposition between innocence and violence. He challenges us rather by the neat and fascinating character of the portraits, by the multiple expressions of the faces mixing determination, pride, serenity or even fun. A work that exhibits, with rare accuracy, the way in which gazes are polarized by these objects of desire and death.
