Initiated in 1967, Renault’s rich collection of modern and contemporary art has celebrated its fiftieth anniversary. Founded on the very innovative principle of active collaboration with artists, at a time when contemporary art was still confidential, it now includes more than 300 works by artists from different countries.
Under the curation of Ann Hindry, director of the Renault Collection, the exhibition at the Clément Foundation presents 13 photographs by Robert Doisneau.
The large sum of photographs made by Robert Doisneau between 1934 and 1939 and from 1945 to 1956 is the doubly valuable testimony of a huge photographer on a pioneering company. He is hired by the documentary department at 22 as a “traveling photographer”. The mission is twofold: to visually identify all the places and activities of the factory (its workshops, its learning rooms, its design offices) but also all that concerns the population of the factory, the day-to-day work of the workers (the canteen, the infirmary, the entrances, the exits) and, on the other hand, take pictures of what would today correspond to advertising for Renault cars.
