When empty pools become works of art

Arnaud Chochon presents his photographic series Entre deux eaux in Nancy, a visual exploration of French public swimming pools emptied of their water.

Captured with a 24mm tilt-shift lens, these images reveal striking architectural perspectives, transforming these functional spaces into places of contemplation. The pools, stripped of their daily use, reveal structures reminiscent of cathedrals or theaters, highlighting the richness of France’s public heritage and its evolution.

This series, which began in 2016 at ETPA, demonstrates Chochon’s commitment to documenting these spaces during their rare periods of emptying, thus offering a reflection on architecture and collective memory.

“My take on public swimming pools, which, usually inhabited and full, are presented here empty. This artistic approach, combined with my technical photography choices, helps reveal unexpected architectural features. The pools are “transformed” into remarkable monuments exuding a surprising serenity and a timeless atmosphere.

This photographic work bears witness to the richness of France’s public heritage, its history, the evolution of the techniques and materials used, but also its functions, from the hygienic role of public pools to the promotion of sport for all,” explains Arnaud Chauchon.
