Including Property from the Estate of Ben Sonnenberg.

Doyle New York will hold an auction of Photographs on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 10am. The sale will offer iconic images by some of the most renowned names in the history of photography.

Highlights include three Berenice Abbot images of New York scenes, all from the large format Parasol Press printing of her works, pencil-signed by the artist from the edition of sixty. These include her iconic Walkway, Manhattan Bridge (est. $3,000-$5,000). From the Estate of Ben Sonnenberg come three classic images by Brassaï, and three New York views by Rudy Burckhardt, a photographer whose work is quite uncommon on the market. His signed Flatiron Buildeing Reflection is estimated $2,000-$3,000.

Groups of Camera Work have been uncommon on the auction scene of late, and Doyle is pleased to offer nine lots of this major journal of the Photo-Secession, including a copy of part XIV with its trove of Steichen photogravures (est. $6,000-$9,000).

As usual, the sale has a large selection of images by Alfred Eisenstaedt, including the delightful Nathan Milstein (violin), Vladimir Horowitz (piano)…relax after having played a Beethoven trio, Berlin 1932. This image of the three great musicians is estimated at $800-$1,200. From Fernand Fonssagrives, there is a sensitive portrait of Leslie Ames (est. $2,000-$3,000). Also in the field of fashion photography is a copy of Horst P. Horst’s Jewelry Model (est. $2,000-$3,000).

André Kertész is represented by his classic Satyric Dancer (est. $4,000-$6,000), again from the Sonnenberg estate. Given the recent interest in Stephen Sondheim, after the publication of his new book, a 1989 Annie Leibovitz image of him sitting in a tree (est. $4,000-$6,000) is striking. We offer two Mapplethorpe portraits, one of William Burroughs (est. $2,500-$3,500), the other of Arnold Schwarzenegger (est. $4,000-$6,000).

Japanese postwar photography is represented by five edgy images by Daido Moriyama, including his Pig (est. $800-$1,200). We offer a number of lots of photobooks, including Cartier-Bresson’s classic The Deecisive Moment , inscribed, and a fine copy, with the belly band, of the first issue if Ed Ruscha’s Every Building on the Sunset Strip (est. $2,000-$3,000). Among the vintage photographs to be sold are a seroes of the fine Indian portraits of Frank Rinehart, of which we offer a substantial selection. Three large format prints by Sebastião Salgado are included in the sale, including the powerful Iceberg… (est. $10,000-$15,000). There is also a splendid Joel Sternfeld McLean Virginia, from the 1983 edition of 50, estimated $15,000-$25,000.
