Dewi Lewis Publishing releases Peter Caton‘s book, ‘Unyielding Floods’.

He has lived on the road for 19 years, the last ten in Africa, where he has documented climate-related crises throughout the continent. Over the last six years he has photographed the devastating floods in South Sudan which is the focus of this book.

In Unyielding Floods, he photographs the villagers of South Sudan trying to protect their homes and livelihoods against catastrophic floods. The floods are now in their sixth year and refuse to recede. According to the World Food Program (WFP) around two-thirds of the population is experiencing acute food insecurity, millions are enduring severe hunger. In addition to the hunger, the permanently stagnant water has contributed to a rise in malaria, water-borne illnesses and more frequent snake bites.

Peter Caton writes : “Unlike most floods, the floods in the world’s youngest country have refused to recede. Affected South Sudanese may represent the world’s first permanent mass displacement due to climate change. However, I captured communities determined to fight back against the floods to save their homeland. I was inspired by their enormous resilience and adaptability. I felt a moral obligation to give a voice to these isolated communities and their plight. Reaching these remote, flood-affected communities, year after year, took a massive logistical effort. There were also the dangers of crocodiles, snakes, and the growing risk of malaria from the plagues of mosquitoes, but these are also the real-life challenges that the villagers face daily living in submerged land.”
