Derby England : Format, Graduates Award

Preview

Graduating in 2014, the six artists represented here are from the University of Derby – five from the BA(Hons)Photography course and one (Ben Connell) from BA(Hons) Commercial Photography – all present work based on their own research. The six artists Aimée Hill, Ben Connell, Ciaran Jones, David Langham, Peter Selway and Yasmin Ensor present engaging collections of works providing commentary on community engagement, natural disaster, language and imagery in advertising, nature, documentary making and technical experimentation.

A number of the exhibiting artists will join QUAD Curator Peter Bonnell for an informal talk about their work and the exhibition.

The BA (Hons) Photography programme at The University of Derby values and encourages imaginative and inventive approaches to photography and supports all types of work, including black and white, colour and digital.

Accredited by the British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP) and the Association of Photographers, the BA (Hons) in Commercial Photography covers a mix of technical and creative abilities in photography, including traditional craft based skills and skills in new digital technologies.

David Langham
Illusions < Deceptions (2014)
A project dealing with the abundance of influential language and imagery in our built environments, particularly advertisements. Removing information from a scene that may be seen as useful (road markings, safety warnings) highlights the dichotomy between what is useful information, and what is not.

Ben Connell
Untitled
Ben Connell’s work is a response to the flooding that occurred throughout the South of England over Christmas and New Year 2013. Using a satirical approach the photographs aim to portray the domestic effects of flooding, often with melancholic results.

Ciaran Jones
Untitled Walks (2014)
Jones’ images were created by placing negatives inside a pair of shoes and going for a walk. The shoes have holes in the toes and sides. This combination of light leakage and the friction caused by the repetitive physical action of walking has the effect of both exposing and wearing away the emulsion at the same time.

Peter Selway
Spring (2014)
The work examines how humans try to design and construct nature within urban and suburban areas. Using a hand-scanner, Selway physically interacts with the plants during scanning; some images are constructed from different scans, often resulting in ‘errors’ within the pictures.

Yasmin Ensor
Strangers in the Box (2014)
A short documentary investigating the artists’ family tree. Ensor uncovered an awful truth when researching her great grandmother, leading to her being subjected to a number of medical investigations. Displayed with artefacts from the Weilun Museum of Poland, this story explores how the past affects the future.

Aimée Hill
The Shepherds
This series follows the Derby Street Pastor organisation as they guide and protect vulnerable young night-time drinkers. The series features recurring themes of distress, exhilaration, and hopelessness fuelled by alcohol, events viewed by the Street Pastors every single weekend.
