Derby England : Format Festival 2015, Exposure 1/2

Preview

Exposure reflects FORMAT’s bold vision to seek out and celebrate a range of responses to the Festival theme, as well as showcasing the work of exciting and emerging talents. Exhibited in locations throughout the city and selected through open submission by an international jury, it represents 76 artists from over 24 countries.
At its core, Exposure is about embracing diverse voices and approaches and engaging audiences in a spirit of openness, discovery and debate.
As FORMAT comes of age on its 10th birthday, this year’s theme, ‘Evidence’ harks back to the very beginnings of photography in its desire to capture the world around us, and provide forensic proof of time, place, space and their relationship to past and unfolding events. But in addition it also encapsulates what photography is about today, through the plethora of images, which record and survey every aspect of our human existence. ‘Evidence’, explores the thin line between photography’s implicit ‘truth’ and its reinterpretation into the world of fiction and narrative by questioning the whole nature of documental value and the representation of actuality.
Indeed, this has provided a rich vein of inspirational material as demonstrated by the range of work and approaches represented here. ‘Evidence’ is interpreted in many contrasting ways, from the record of human trace within the urban and rural landscape to autobiographical accounts of memory and personal belonging.
Recurrent themes are also explored through the impact of technologies, conspiracy theories, the documentation of identity and personal records, the recording of performance and the staged act, and the phenomena of self-surveillance combined with the sharing of images through social media. Through collections of clues, signs, marks and classifications, EXPOSURE presents some of the most engaging and innovative photography from around the world.
