DAY 5 – Art Miami & Context
Art Miami and Context are two connected fairs in the Design District, with a vibrant young energy and lots of graphic, vibrant work. [1],[2],[3] If all the fairs were kids at school, Art Miami would be the one in drama club with blue streaks in his hair, and Context would be the little brother with a dirty mouth. I saw a handful of pieces by conceptual and Pop masters. [4],[5],[6] I noticed a good deal of humorous works, clever text pieces[7],[8],[9] and use of celebrity. [10],[11],[12]
I saw some original multi-media animal sculptures [13],[14] and more work dealing with currency [15],[16]. The highlight of the fair for me were the three oil paintings by Ran Ortner [17],[18]. Ran spends years on each work, and makes his own oil paints with a formula almost identical to that which Rembrandt used. Many of my favorite works at the fair were the photo-realist and surreal paintings. [19],[20],[21],[22] And of course, I found some wonderful photographs. [23],[24],[25]. I was very interested in the ones that had been made unique by the artist drawing on the prints. [26],[27] The fair was very visually stimulating and there was far more too see than I could possibly have taken in. [28],[29],[30]

That evening, I went to the South Seas hotel for the Jack Shainman party for Nick Cave, which was very fun, but I was far too tired to stay for very long.
