Daoud Aoulad-Syad : Retrospective

Preview

His everyday is that of the humble, a life without artifice. So what’s his talent? When he photographs a mother, she becomes all mothers. When he shoots a fisherman or a potter, they become all fishermen, all potters, all men of many faces struggling against an ungrateful ocean or a moving mass of earth shaped by fire and gestures. |…] A single image is a poem, a wordless poem, full of silence but if we listen closely, we can make out song, laughter and stories. His performers are tragic, his transvestites moving and generous, the entertainment on show at Jemaa-el-Fna, the alleyways of the medina and the street fairs are pieces of lives seized on the spot, capturing an instant that is so weighty that we can’t tell whether it is the past or a constantly evolving present. Daoud’s eye sees several dimensions.

The power of his images come from a detail, a gesture, an expression or an attitude. He has never set out to seek poetry; he doesn’t need to wait for it or watch out for it. His instinct is always alert. His love for the art of photography opens the way to an imperceptible imaginary. The everyday he reveals is constantly in motion. Most of the time, it would escape our attention in the blink of an eye. Fortunately, Daoud is among us, there with us.
