Best of March 2020 : Heidi and Hans-Jürgen Koch : Thank You, Mouse!

Preview

The book THANK YOU, MOUSE! by the photographers Heidi and Hans-Jürgen Koch is paying tribute to the laboratory mouse, mankind’s best friend.

Laboratory mice give us their lives. So we can live. Mice were the second creature after human beings whose complete genome was sequenced. Because our genes are so similar they have taken our place on the research front. Hence day after day legions of mice are bred and used as an anonymous mass of animals in laboratories around the world. Can this be justified on moral grounds – or is it possibly even necessary from an ethical point of view? In any case, the knowledge gained for the benefit of mankind is immense and often helping us to survive.

Heidi and Hans-Jürgen Koch are paying tribute to these little heroes, treating them as individuals with their own personality. Thanks to the artistic approach, the photographs of the ‘human mice’ are also given a universal meaning. They reflect nothing less than the dignity of the creature and the respect for it.

Heidi and Hans-Jürgen Koch started out on their joint expedition into countless publications in the most prestigious magazines around the globe which testify to their passion and professional work. They have been awarded many prizes for their unique way to view the world and the wide range of photographic works: e.g. Art Directors Club Germany and Europe, BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Lead Award, Hansel-Mieth-Prize, German Prize for Scientific Photography, Alfred Fried Photography Award, German Photobook Award, as well as the World Press Photo Award. They received the Dr.-Erich-Salomon Award for ‘outstanding photography in journalism’, which probably is the most important international award for photography granted in Germany.
