Over a period of 10 years, Hangar has built a reputation for an institute dedicated to photography through stunning exhibitions, and as the organisers of PhotoBrussels.
They live up to their reputation by selecting for Art Rotterdam / UNSEEN four photographers, each with unique works. In doing so, Hangar highlights the indivisible relationship between the visual arts and photography, pushing the boundaries of creation and fostering dialogue between past and present.
- Sylvie Bonnot (FR 1982) is known for her ‘mues’ (moults). In this process she removes the silver-based membrane from her photographic prints and repositions it onto various supports. The result, an image with crystallized creases, carry intertwined narratives of organic structures, evidence of the symbiotic coexistence of all life on Earth.
- Antoine De Winter (BE, 1985) works with glass, combining ancient photographic techniques and gold leaf to create photographic relics. Like fragments of memory, his works evoke the very substance of their subjects, whether they are portraits modified by AI or images created with salt and earth of Cadaquès
- Lior Gal (FR/IL, 1977, lives and works in Siena (IT)) combines photography and weaving. Using fragments of analogue landscapes, whose obscured surfaces evoke time and meditation in the face of mechanical immediacy.
- Luc Praet (BE, 1966) revisits the floral paintings of the Flemish masters. With photography he creates a visual archive, which he then manipulates to reveal the passage of time and the mechanisms of memory.
