Bildhalle presented a a special solo exhibition with the latest works of Dutch photographer Casper Faassen at Art Rotterdam.
Faassen shows at Art Rotterdam work under the title “Madoka”, and he selected images from the dance series Movement, landscapes that seem as they are viewed through the mists of time, captivating still-life’s and portraits.
Faassen creates mesmerizing artworks, using his characteristic and unique combination of photography, paint, and the application of craquelure. In addition, Bildhalle captures Faassen’s dynamic approach by exhibiting a cloud as a vivid artwork, illustrating the juxtaposition between appearing and disappearing, a main theme in the artist’s works. The attentive viewer will also notice in his oeuvre the other topics such as transience, beauty and female splendor.
Casper Faassen grew up in Leiden. He saw works of famous Leiden masters Gerrit Dou (1613-1675), Jan van Goyen (1596-1656) and naturally Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) and this fuelled his passion for drawing, painting and art from an early age.
He studied at the University of Amsterdam, where he continued to pursue his artistic ambitions, painting daily and thus compiling an impressive oeuvre. Here he got to know more contemporary artists like Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920). This is reflected particularly in his nudes, with analogies in the treatment of the subject and in a similar equally strong drawing of lines
Faasssen presents himself as a dynamic artist: he constantly questions his materials, techniques and disciplines. He creates a contemporary oeuvre with modern-day means – but here and there silent references to the cityscapes, vanitas images and floral arrangements from Rembrandt’s Golden Age creep into his creations.
