Arles 2025 : Galerie Triangle : Nicolas Serve, False Start

Preview

Galerie Triangle is setting up shop for another year at 65 Quai de la Roquette for a comprehensive event on the theme of youth. Among other events, the gallery is offering an exhibition of Nicolas Serve’s work.

At fourteen, a less-than-conscientious psychiatrist prescribed Lexomil (anti anxiety drug) to silence a tumultuous start to adolescence. It would take him seventeen years to get rid of these deadly pills that had changed the course of his life.

Beyond the personal story, it’s important to remember that this situation is far from being an isolated case or the result of a lack of awareness of the undesirable side effects caused by this molecule.

In 2023, 9 million French people were prescribed benzodiazepines, 40% of them for longer than the recommended duration, creating chronic addiction problems from a very young age.

This exhibition, following on from his previous work, Ethanol, offers the viewer an embodied interpretation of a real public health problem, drawing on the power of an intimate narrative to document a little-documented contemporary issue.
