Following a series of 28 small-format booklets, ‘Leaving Today’ is the first large photo book by Berlin-based photographer Holger Biermann and features 128 pages of 68 photographs taken in New York between 2001 and 2003.
Holger Biermann experienced September 11, 2001 and its aftermath as an eyewitness. In the style of classic street photography and in black and white, the majority of the pictures describe the street life of the metropolis in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11. In between, however, his color shots of the events of the day itself are repeatedly interspersed, like flashbacks to a nightmare.
The photographs collected in ‘Leaving Today’ mark his start as a passionate professional photographer. The pictures are preceded by a text by Freddy Langer, editor of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, where he is responsible for the features/photography section, and a text by the photographer.
After the dummy of the book made it onto the shortlist for the Luma Dummy Award 2024 and the first german/english edition was sold out within three months, Blotto Books is now presenting the second edition for the Rencontres d’Arles 2025, this time with a special French text section. The publishers Heike Grebin and Andreas Trogisch are pleased to present the book during the opening week as part of the opening of the “Berliner Mischpoke” exhibition by the Franzkowiak gallery. In addition to the signed copies, there will be a special edition in a box with an original color print, which is limited to 9 copies.
