Since its inception, the Manuel Rivera-Ortiz Foundation has supported documentary photography as a catalyst for change, social justice, and awareness of contemporary human issues.
Each year, through its scholarship grant programs, this foundation encourage new and emerging photographers and filmmakers to submit their documentary work for consideration by their panel of internationally recognized jurors in the fields of documentary photography and film. This mission is to lend a voice to vulnerable populations around the world as they face strife, war, famine, disease and displacement.
The ARLES DOC’HOUSE # 1 is the third summer exhibition organized by The Manuel Rivera-Ortiz Foundation. The exhibition takes place at Blain House, their 17th century mansion situated in the heart of the Historic Center of Arles. It presents the public with leading-edge documentary projects that are impacting, thoughtful and inspiring from the point of view of putting forth powerful and eloquent stories that address humanity, social justice, and other issues of our times.
This year’s summer program examines documentary from several perspectives, presenting the work of the 2016 documentary grant laureates Mr. Enri Canaj, and Mr. Ismail Ferdous. The Exhibitions: Off Productions and ‘le siècle de Piaf,’ under the curatorial direction of Mr. Tanguy Dairaine, presents a selection of pictures of the life of Edith Piaf culled from the Mazillier-Berrot collection. Piaf is universally regarded as France’s greatest popular singer.
Also, for the first time in Arles, “fotofever” (art fair) brings together 10 internationally renowned galleries presenting an indisputable portrait of documentary work in our times and exhibited at the foundation.
