Arles 2016 : Screenings of Koudelka, Shooting Holy Land

Preview

As part of its partnership with Les Rencontres d’Arles, Cinéma Actes Sud will hold a series of screenings of Koudelka: Shooting Holy Land, the new documentary on renowned Magnum Agency photographer Josef Koudelka.

Forty years after capturing the iconic images of the Soviet invasion of Prague in 1968, the legendary Magnum Agency photographer, Josef Koudelka, arrives in Israel and Palestine. On first seeing the nine-meter-high wall built by Israel in the West Bank, Koudelka, marked by life behind the Iron Curtain, is deeply shaken. He embarks on a four-year project in the region which will confront him once again with the harsh reality of violence and conflict.  Filmed by his Israeli assistant at the time, Gilad Baram, this is a unique and intimate look into the solitary creative process of one of photography’s greatest living masters as he searches for the elusive moment in which a photograph emerges.
