The LUMA Foundation announced a three-year partnership with L.A. Dance Project, a Los Angeles-based artist collective founded in 2012 by choreographer and dancer Benjamin Millepied. Located in the Parc des Ateliers, the building “La Formation” will be dedicated to Performing Arts Residencies, and will feature rehearsal studio spaces, therapy rooms, accommodations and living quarters. Founded in 2012 by Millepied along with composer Nico Muhly, art consultant Matthieu Humery, founding producer Charles Fabius, and composer Nicholas Britel, L.A. Dance Project creates new work and revives seminal collaborations from influential dance makers. Programs include full-length evenings in traditional theater environments as well as various modular performances in non-traditional environments. New works by the company are multidisciplinary collaborations across artistic disciplines, and include visual artists, musicians, designers, directors and composers. Since its founding, the company has toured and given master classes at international venues and festivals including the Holland Festival (NL), the Saitama Arts Theater (Japan), the Edinburgh International Festival and Sadler’s Wells (UK), Shanghai and Beijing Opera House (China), Maison de la Danse and Théâtre du Châtelet (France). In the US, the company has performed at venues including Jacob’s Pillow, Brooklyn Academy of Music and New York City Center. The company’s studios are housed in the Los Angeles Theatre Center in Downtown L.A., and the company has performed in Los Angeles at The Music Center’s Walt Disney Music Hall, MOCA, Union Station, The Theatre at Ace Hotel, and The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. This summer, alongside a program of works by choreographer Merce Cunningham and composer John Cage; and Justin Peck, Resident Choreographer of the New York City Ballet, the L.A. Dance Project will present Millepied’s Hearts & Arrows, a widely-acclaimed work inspired by the Los Angeles River, set to the music of Philip Glass and featuring a visual concept designed by artist Liam Gillick.
