Arles 2013: photographic conversation (Olympus)

Preview

After five years of commitment to the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie at Arles, Olympus has strengthened the partnership with a new project. Three students from the school have been invited to enter into ‘conversation’ with three famous contemporary photographers: Sarah Moon, Stanley Greene and Jean-Christian Bourcart.

It is an exchange of views, both metaphorically and literally. Each of these photographers will provide a corpus of fifteen images; the students will then produce images. In appropriating the photographs taken by their elders, they are at liberty to extend them, to refute them, to incorporate them into collages—basically to create their own artworks out of them, as a response to them. This photographic dialogue will be accompanied throughout the process by regular conversations between the ‘masters’ and the three students: Lise Dua, Jeannie Abert and Matthieu Rosier.

The whole project will be the subject of two simultaneous exhibitions: one in the courtyard of the Hôtel d’Arlatan (1-8 July), the other, at the invitation of the Rencontres d’Arles, in the Parc des Ateliers (1 July-22 September). It will also be the subject of a public encounter between the six protagonists of the project in order to share the details of the exchange with members of the public. This conference will form part of the ‘Olympus Rencontres’ at the Hôtel d’Arlatan during opening week.
