Anna Fox: Resort 1

Preview

Anna Fox came to Butlin’s at Bognor Regis in 2009 after two  decades of investment, refurbishment, rebranding and continuing corporate change. Throughout her photographic career she has been interested in places and situations that might be seen as somehow indicative of a prevailing national mood; subjects that might act as barometers of the social climate. But she has also looked at her own life in this way, with a degree of detachment and at times unease; scrutinising the most familiar surroundings, the most intimate events as if conducting a private litmus test of wider conditions and values. Collectively her work since the mid-1980s stands as a kind of social history, assembled by a photographer who combines many identities: investigative journalist, feminist, diarist, detached chronicler, eye-witness reporter and artist. Her work at Butlin’s is another chapter in this unfolding narrative, and one in which she has consciously returned to a subject – the British at leisure – that has been a defining one for photography in this country over the last forty years.
