In 2018, Ralph Gibson created the series “Vu, Imprévu”, through which he revisits fifteen of his most iconic photographs… through music! Today, we’re excited to announce the release of his very first single, titled “Altar Boy”!! An exceptional track now available on your favorite streaming platform. The full album will be released on October 31, 2025.
The “Vu, Imprévu” series was born from a desire to reinterpret some fifteen of his emblematic images by composing an original piece of music for each one. These extraordinary and rare “double-works” are presented as framed silver gelatin prints, accompanied by a handwritten score and an MP3 file. They were recently exhibited at the Venet Foundation, and featured in a book published by IKKI Books. The first single, along with the upcoming album on October 31 (published by Melmax Music – Bigaignon), completes this unique project.
Celebrated for his groundbreaking visual vocabulary in the 1970s with his Black Trilogy —The Somnambulist (1970), Déjà-Vu (1973), and Days at Sea (1974)— Ralph Gibson is also a talented guitarist. He discovered the guitar at age 13 and picked up a camera four years later. Since then, he has remained an eternal apprentice, believing there is always more to learn from both instruments. This series offers art enthusiasts and collectors a unique opportunity to explore another facet of the American master’s genius, to revisit some of Gibson’s most iconic photographs from a completely new perspective. The selected photographs, taken between 1968 and 1990, are each paired with a piece of music, specially composed, performed, and recorded by the artist in his New York studio.
