Alizé Le Maoult, Through their eyes…

Preview

Every Friday, for 10 consecutive weeks, The Eye of Photography is publishing one of the 34 portraits of war photographers taken by Alizé Le Maoult. This week, we honor Véronique de Viguerie, from France.

It had been a long time since my friend Katia Clarens talked to me about Véronique de Viguerie, with some admiration. They had worked together and had plans to cover elections in an at-risk African country. Veronique was pregnant, I thought they were still a bit crazy. They did not get their visas. I was relieved without knowing her. One evening in October 2013, I arrived very late to our meeting near the Canal Saint Martin, in Paris. And I discovered a blond angel in the darkness of the falling night. A pure and luminous beauty, pregnant and with a stroller in which there was another little blond angel … It was cold … Veronique was going to leave for the birth of her child for several months in the South. The night wrapped us up. It was much too late to take a portrait. It was only two years later, for one of her book signings, that I made this portrait … there is both a mild sweetness and gravity  in her that I likes. I was afraid of not capturing her beauty, strength and grace.

Véronique de Viguerie wrote about this war photograph: “I took this picture two months after my lover died in my arms. I sank into deep depression. On my first job after his death, I could not care less about death, I even wanted to get as close to it as I could, and even kiss death. Then with Manon, the journalist who was with me, we pushed the boundaries and came back with a powerful story. It saved me. It was the first step towards life, towards the future. I owe a lot to this story .”
