Throckmorton Fine Art, New York, is known for its focus on Latin American masters of photography including Ruven Afanador, Mario Algaze, Lola Álvarez Bravo, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Flor Garduño, and Graciela Iturbide who is considered one of the greatest contemporary photographers of Mexico—and all of Latin America. For the past 50 years, Iturbide has produced majestic, raw, and visceral photographs. Rather than acting as a distant voyeur, Iturbide seeks to integrate herself into the communities she photographs and this close relationship led to images with unparalleled sensitivity. Mujer Ángel (Angel Woman), 1979, shows a Seri woman in traditional dress walking through the desert holding a boom box, a mark of modern technology. An exhibition of her work is currently on view Fondation Cartier in Paris through May 29.
