This is a book that made us feel like kids again this Christmas, and which, upon reflection, belongs here on Zineland. Poemotion 2, the color follow-up to a volume of the same name from Lars Müller Publishers (Switzerland), is a magical book.

Magical, because nothing before has ever shown that a simple sheet of plastic moiré film could give life to 30 abstract illustrations, making cubes flutter, color balls bounce, targets rotate, and checkered patterns into epilepsy-inducing barcodes.

There’s an incredible moment in Poemotion, from Japanese artistic director Takahiro Kurashima, when the reader discovers the plastic film that can be placed over each of the illustrations. One can easily spend hours with it. You don’t need to be connected to anything; the brain does all the work. It’s like being at the movies. Naturally, we start looking for the right way to squint our eyes, that would reveal to us, underneath the surface of the visible signs of everyday life, their fanciful pirate dance.
