Claudia Huidobro was a model, strong from this experience of the manufactured image, she questions the gaze on the idealized woman, through fifteen works whose primary matter are photographs from magazines.
The “Merveilleuses” are photographs of pin-ups in lingerie, pages of men’s magazines whose ink has been sanded off to make frescoes of women whose image disappears rubbed out.
The “Tools” used by the “Wonderful Women” to make themselves beautiful are enlarged like garden tools, such as this hair clip with a menacing jaw, such as this insect fake eyelashes or even these stockings sharpened like blades.
“Her hair”, hair that waves in the dark, fake blondes and real redheads, fantasized feather banners, birds of paradise…
The “Pin-ups” are nothing more than legs dressed in black silk and glued to paper.
They play with tinsel drawn in pencil.
In “Homework” there are tutorials from the magazine “Arts Ménagers”, cut out and repainted. Hands that give lessons in know-how.
Sewing, ironing, cooking, cleaning, repetitive gestures devolved until recently to the female gender… Score for a dream daily life, domestic dance.
“LALéELA” is a large collage of images gleaned from magazines and books. Cut syllables, a meander of onomatopoeia whose white, black and red vowels indicate the feminine in the Spanish (A) and French (E) alphabets, the two cultures of Claudia Huidobro, Franco-Chilean artist.
Drawings in sensual pastel or on fragile porcelain sheets complete the exhibition.
