Trends: Julia Fullerton-Batten

Preview

Korea is the latest series of Julia Fullerton-Batten. She became interested in the contrasts and tensions that dominate the country, expressing them through staged portraits of Korean women wearing traditional dress in the heart of their modern, spare cities. It’s a wonderful contrast which the photographer illustrates with formalism and poetry to tell the story of this country and the lives of its delicate citizens in a strict environment.

Julia Fullerton-Batten’s work has appeared in The New YorkerLe Monde and The Financial Times, among others, and has been exhibited in Paris, Shanghai, Madrid, London and, starting this February, at the Swedish Museum of Photography. Born in Germany, she is now based in London.

Fullerton-Batten has received much critical acclaim and has been featured in the New Yorker, Le Monde, and the Financial Times, among others. Her work was the cover image for Thames & Hudson’s 2009 book A Guide to Collecting Contemporary Photography. She has shown at esteemed international institutions such as Centre Pompidou, Paris; Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai; Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid; and had a solo exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Opening in February, her work is featured at the Swedish Museum of Photography. Born in Germany, Fullerton-Batten lives and works in London.
