Trans Photographic Press : Thierry Girard : Far-Westhoek

Preview

Trans Photographic Press announces the release of Thierry Girard’s new book, a revised and expanded edition of his first book, published in 1982, Far-Westhoek.

In 1982, then a very young photographer, Thierry Girard published his first book, Far-Westhoek, following an artist residency in the Westhoek, the far end of French Flanders around Dunkirk.

The interest generated today by his body of work has led him to revisit certain key stages of his artistic journey. This reissue of Far-Westhoek, extensively revised and expanded, allows us to better understand the importance of this work in the structuring of Thierry Girard’s photographic thinking, and the way it fits into the historical turning point of the late 1970s and early 1980s, when a new generation of photographers appeared, more visually nourished by what was coming from the United States than by a certain tradition of French poetic realism. Arnaud Claass’s preface and Thierry Girard’s afterword shed light on these two aspects.
