TOBE Gallery presents FIREFLY volume 0002 by JF Julian.
The central element of JF Julian’s photographic vision is the exploration of the night, a terrain of tension, fleeting flashes, and raw emotional charge. His FIREFLY series is built around this atmosphere: a choreography of shadow and light, spontaneity and contemplation, where the human figure appears vulnerable, transient, and intensely alive; much like the brief glow of fireflies in the dark.
The project condenses more than 20 years of artistic research, shaped by intimacy, fragility, and the conscious embrace of eroticism as a legitimate form of art. These are not neutral documents. His images are meant to be stared at.
“My photographs, by their very voyeuristic nature, unsettle both the mind and passion.
As children, we were told not to stare, because staring transforms an innocent gaze into voyeurism.
My stories are made for staring.”
“The path of intensity is enough.”
“Move in order to remember. Let melancholy in.”
A Life Lived Through the Lens
JF Julian left France at the age of 16 to explore the United States, a journey that shaped the nomadic foundation of his artistic life. He traveled extensively across the country; from California to Mississippi to New York; before returning to Paris, where he maintained strong ties with the U.S. He studied Fine Arts and Photography at The American University of Paris and Parsons School of Design.
In the same year, he produced his first major photo report on war crimes in Kosovo (nominated for a World Press Photo award), alongside his first fashion editorial for The Face magazine, where he worked for two years as assistant art director. His path weaves through music videos, advertising, and video art, while maintaining an independent and deeply personal artistic practice. Today, he continues to create commercials, films, and editorial content, while exhibiting worldwide.
FIREFLY 0002 is more than a photographic series, it’s a fragmented self-portrait, a nocturnal diary, and a meditation on presence and disappearance.
