A world first: never before has a time capsule been dedicated exclusively to photography.
Openning of the trunk in 2026 to mark the bicentenary of the earliest surviving permanent photograph, taken by Nicéphore Niépce in his village of Saint-Loup-de-Varennes and entitled *Le Point de vue du Gras*.
From 1 September to 31 December 2026, a collection of photographs and handwritten texts answering the question: ‘How do you imagine photography in 2039?’ will be gathered both by post and at photography events, starting with the Salon Photo & Vidéo at La Villette.
The trunk will then be exhibited until 28 February 2027 at various venues in the Paris region before setting off for the Nicéphore Niépce Museum in Chalon-sur-
Saône, where it will be officially sealed, displayed to the public and preserved for twelve years.
The trunk will be reopened in March 2039 to mark the bicentenary of François Arago’s speech on the daguerreotype, when he presented to the world the patent for photography. Plans for an exhibition are currently underway.
