Stand By/ За Беларусь: this short bilingual title (English-Belarusian) says much about this album produced by the collective Sputnik Photos. If ‘stand by’ evokes a sense of waiting (not to mention a nod to the International Code of Belarus, BY), it is a widespread slogan displayed on billboards. The unreadable mixture of two formulas on the cover, far from being a misprint, announces the content of the seven interlinked photographic stories, a game of mirrors reflecting multiple Histories, memories and identities in a society of 9.5 million souls too often overshadowed by the image of the “little father” Alexander Lukashenko, better known abroad as the “last dictator in Europe.”
