Signatures: Œil pour œil

Preview

The exhibition Œil pour œil to mark the fifth anniversary of Signatures, Maison de Photographes. Every week we’ll be presenting you with a series on display at the Hôtel de Sauroy through June 14th, which places the work of 8 different artists into dialogue.

DEATH
, Eric Dexheimer

There’s nothing spectacular about these photographs. Everything is in the restraint the photographer uses to examine dead flesh. In the series In fine, we see images radiating light or immersed in darkness, inviting the viewer to come closer to what terrifies many. These reassuring images show a peaceful end, a continued life between shadow and light. The series Primal, A Theory of Violence, is darker and explores the violence done to man, be it societal or the aftermath of murders, assaults or barbaric acts inherent to our species. Here the forensic institute become an intersection of violence and the ensuing pain.

SEX, Xavier Lambours

The desire to show sex with photography is to remind people that we all have sexual organs that are hidden most of our lives. Mapplethorpe knew how to bring them out… Sex imagery presents the same challenge for a filmmaker attempting three extremely delicate boat scenes: a love scene, a battle scene and a dance scene. Who has succeeded in shooting a love scene at a dance during a bombing? Sex shown in an image is limitless because the imagination and fantasy don’t have them. What I mainly do in my photographs is go out and meet people, animals and spaces. Since I don’t have a memory, I photograph them to help me remember them.
