Shanghai, Adou: –Land of Desolation

Preview

Although we live in a world saturated with digital images, the Chinese photographer Adou has responded to this paradigm shift by demonstrating the splendors of film photography. Conscious of the effect this phenomenon has had on many Chinese photographers, the M97 Gallery in Shanghai gave Adou his first solo exhibition, unveiling works from his latest series, Adou (2009-2011).

Adou (b. 1973 in Sichuan) is behind the camera and in front of it, literally exposing himself or hiding behind the lens, taking striking, ingenious and profoundly sad portraits, as in his series Samalada (2006), shot in the mountains of his native province. That series is also on display alongside his more recent work.

For the series Adou, the artist traveled to Gansu in Inner Mongolia, to Qinghai and other remote provinces to produce powerful film photographs where man and nature meet. The textures of the desert soil and the expressionist perspectives endow these desolate images with an almost mystical dimension.
