Shadi Ghadirian at the Lyon public library

Preview

The Lyon public library presents the retrospective exhibition of Shadi Ghadirianfrom the 8th of October 2015 to the 9th of January 2016. This exhibition is presented in partnership with the Silk Road Gallery (Tehran) and in resonance with the Biennial of contemporary art in Lyon. With this exhibition Shadi Ghadirian will present for the first time the “Too loud a solitude” video work carried out in 2015.

Shadi Ghadirian is considered to be one of the first Iranian photographers whose images contributed to modifying the perception of art in Iran and of Iranian contemporary society, at the end of the 1990s. Her unique style was in contrast with the harsh and brutal images usually associated, at that time, with Iran. Using the language of art, Shadi Ghadirians’ images defied not only the contradictions of Eastern societies, but also how the whole world saw this country. By mixing in an unprecedented way, through her artistic language, subjects of a social nature, and taboos, she changed the course of contemporary photography in Iran, and has paved the way for many other photographers towards a completely different approach of this medium.
