Scope by Pauline Rochas and Carole Beaupré

Preview

Scope was the second Art Basel show we’d gone to and our eyes were boggled by diverse pieces of art from international emerging photographers and contemporary artists.

What we found interesting were the 2 pieces from Antonio Manago & Simone Zecubi @ J&PEG representing George Washington next to Obama.

The photo painted result is the final stage of a process in which the two artists engage in a true performance. During the performance, the artists themselves embody the subjects of their works.
Figures emerging from a black background, appear like identities in transit, sculpted and almost frozen by light.

In terms of narrative documentary we were struck by Jill Peters’s He/She/He the Sworns Virigns of Albania, a group of women who have taken a vow to live as men. A reflection on gender.
“They have all chosen a life of celybacy over what their life had been…Or were sure to become”

We liked to be transported behind the scenes of Andy Warhol’s factory. Taking a glimpse inside the working studios and mind of a charismatic artist thru the eyes of William John Kennedy.

The macro still life photos of a chicken bone and 2 figures @ KFC and the Lego piece by Slinkachu (clin d’oeil a David Levinthal)
Interesting concept = seating on what they’re eating and the scale comparison.

We were blown away by the Photo Montage, Composition of Jean Francois Rauzier. So well achieved, incredible maitrise of 3D space, it felt golden, royal, and flawless. Symetry, Grandiose effect.

We loved the nudes of Guido Argentini (which reminded us of Ellen Von Unwerth & Helmut Newton’s work). A well as the colorful POP Chewing Pink piece from Marilyn Minter. Michael Dweck’s Lifestyle shot of Gisele & Rachel cruising down the Malecon // couldn’t help but thinking about Thelma & Louise – The escape.

The 4 portraits of the same little girl posing like a flamish painting // the girl with the pearl earing. Light skin, Color Palette.

Koh Sang Woo ‘s The Burning Flowers photoshop treatment, image manipulation
Behind the scenes = Warhol at work
Loved Tereza Vlckova Untitled from the series a perfect day – Freedom sensation

Loved the still life of a Dollar bill all crunched up: “The Kids are alright” by Dan Tague.
