Say Who is a very attractive site that reports vernissages, cocktails and other Parisian parties. One of their editors and photographers, Jean Picon, a great fan of Ren Hang exhibited at the MEP in Paris wrote this beautiful text and made these photos during the opening night. Here they are !
In February 2017, we learned of the death of photographer Ren Hang at the age of 29 – a disappearance that created a surge on social networks. Two years later, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie celebrates the Chinese artist with the exhibition “Love, Ren Hang”. Composed of 150 photos from several collections in Europe and China, the exhibition consists mainly of portraits. His friends, his own mother, young Chinese recruited on the Internet but also landscapes and nudes, the work of Ren Hang, sometimes poetic, sometimes tinged with humor, is unique and immediately recognizable. Questions about the body, the link between eroticism and nature, and the relationship to identity and sexuality that emerge from his work have been censored in China, the artist has met with great success with the young people, for whom he embodied the expression of a desire for freedom and creation in a repressive political context. “Love, Ren Hang” invites you to navigate the world of photography through several rooms each dedicated to a theme: the pregnance of red, his mother, the acid colors, the nature … For this first season of its programming of 2019, Alongside Ren Hang, the MEP welcomes the prints of artists Yoonkkyung Kang and Coco Capitan with their “Incandescence” and “Busy Living” exhibitions. The dreamlike journey through the world of each photographer, both phantasmagorical and committed, can be done until the end of May.
