Double Feature is a photobook edited by Mark Alice Durant. Durant invited 44 writers to respond with ekphrastic texts to over 200 vernacular photographs — in sepia, black-and-white, and color — from the archive of artist and collector Patrick Pound. These images reflect Pound’s ongoing investigation of photographic materiality amid the shift from analogue to digital.
In the summer of 2024, Durant sent a PDF with a wide, but not complete, selection of the images to the writers who agreed to participate with the prompt: “Texts can be ekphrastic, engaging in specific image(s) from the book, or can simply be inspired by the ideas of doubling / layering / twinning / simultaneous realities / blurring boundaries, etc., that are evoked by the photographs.”
“Patrick Pound is a voracious yet discriminating collector of vernacular photographs. He gathers, redeems even, thousands of snapshots scattered to the randomizing winds of second-hand shops and eBay. He thinks, reconsiders, organizes, and assembles groupings of images that use the materiality and syntax of photography to ask questions about our personal and collective lives as translated through photographs.” – Mark Alice Durant
