Rotterdam Art Week – UNSEEN & Art Rotterdam – the Art fair for the Netherlands (and surrounding areas)

Preview

Art Rotterdam positions itself as arguably the most important art fair in the Netherlands, and is now presenting itself in a completely new light. Over the past two years, significant strategic changes have been implemented. Two years ago, Art Rotterdam left its long-standing home in the historic Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam, whilst UNSEEN recently moved on from the equally iconic Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam.

The first consequence of the move to the AHOY fairgrounds is that, with 14,000 m² of exhibition space, Art Rotterdam can accommodate more galleries. The second consequence is that the merger of UNSEEN and Art Rotterdam enables the fair to reach a wider audience. Thirdly, the event is keeping pace with the evolution and perception of the art world: photography is rightly no longer regarded as a separate form of expression, and an increasing number of ‘classical’ artists are integrating lens-based art into their artistic practice, and vice versa.

Not only the venue but also the programme is getting a fresh look. Familiar gallery names are absent, replaced by lesser-known institutions. I do not get the impression that this leads to a decline in quality in photography on the contrary, both in terms of content and concept, it promises to be a fascinating edition. Just under 160 institutions are showcasing some 180 installations and booths. Around half of the exhibitors are Dutch; the rest come mainly from Western Europe, with a few exceptions. At UNSEEN, the ratio is more extreme: only 20% of the galleries are Dutch.

Art Rotterdam 2026 will be open to the public for three days from 27 to 29 March. Founded in 2000, the fair aims to enhance the visitor experience through clearly defined zones. UNSEEN alone comprises five sections at the fair, with the sixth taking place in a separate venue.

In addition to the Main Section and the Solo/Duo programme, the three photography sections within the fair each have a distinct character:

  • “New Photography” showcases emerging photographers from Unseen’s international network, whose work lies at the intersection of photography and contemporary art, challenging the current possibilities of the medium.
  • “Encounters” revolves around dialogue, bringing together photographers from different contexts, backgrounds and visual languages.
  • “The Past/Present” focuses on photographic archives and historical documents: works that use the history of existing images as raw material for contemporary reflection. It is particularly with this last section that we depart from the original objectives: whilst UNSEEN originally placed explicit emphasis on innovation, this section explores analogue photography up to the year 2000.

The highly popular Unseen Book Market is held separately at the Nederlands Fotomuseum on the Wilhelminapier throughout Art Week, with around 40 independent publishers showcasing photography books. Entry is free or at a reduced rate. It is one of the most accessible ways to immerse yourself in contemporary photographic culture without an exhibition ticket, and the Wilhelminapier site, right by the water’s edge, is worth a visit in its own right.

A key feature of the fair is the Prospects 2026 exhibition (Mondriaan Fund), which showcases 92 emerging artists studying at Dutch art institutions. It is curated by Johan Gustavsson and Daphne Verberg around three thematic clusters collective memory, technology and ecology, and the human body as site of inquiry. The full Prospects 2026 artist list is expected via GalleryViewer.com from approximately 20 March. Worth checking before you arrive to identify names in advance.

The second off-site initiative of Art Rotterdam is the 10th edition of the NN Art Award 2026 The winner will be announced on 27 March at Kunsthal Rotterdam, where shortlisted work is on show from 14 March through 25 May.
