Her, by Marjorie Salvaterra is on show at Ralph Pucci (London) since the 8th June 2023. Known for her ability to investigate the many, and often contradictory, roles that are demanded of women in a modern life, Californian photographer Salvaterra’s images reflect a humour in and exploration of the creatively uncertain spaces inhabited when we are “in between”. Her expresses not quite knowing what comes next; waiting for a sign, waiting for direction. The exploitation of negative space in combination with the monochromatic tones of the composition evoke the pause taken when deciding on a path, while the cinematic quality of the images highlight the surreal, unpredictable freedom of Salvaterra’s narratives.
Marjorie Salvaterra says: “The London exhibit takes pieces from my Her, Ice and Shine series and puts them together to tell the story of women and their daily journeys. From the roles we play to the ideals we are supposed to be. In black and white theatrical presentation, the photographs portray the fine line between sanity and insanity in trying to be all things to all people. It’s an honour to be showing Her alongside Andree Putman’s legendary work at RALPH PUCCI (london). They say the journey is the thing, but sometimes we need to pause before we decide which way to go. In whites and light tones, Her provides a space to just be.”
