Nino Migliori and Costa Gavras, The Big Names of Photomed 2013

Of the two headliners of the 2014 edition of the festival, which tries every year to bring together big-name artists with emerging talent, only one was able to make the trip. Nino Migliori is a master of Italian photography, while Costa Gavras is more known for his films than his photographs. But what they share is that little something extra that elevates our daily lives by showing us, plainly, “the people.”

Nino Migliori is sometimes still underrated, even in his native Italy. However, now in his eighties, Migliori has stood the test of time. In the 1950s, he wandered across Italy, always shooting at just the right moment: a perfectly horizontal diver, brothers floating weightlessly during a game of badminton, a far cry from the austere images we might have in mind of monasteries and men seated in the neighborhood bistro. The humor in these photographs is a reflection of Migliori himself: simple, smiling, as passionate as always. Having fallen for Beirut at first glance, he hopes to return to photograph the city and its people, “who seem so alive.”

The faces that appear in Costa Gavras’ photographs are alive as well. For the first time, he’s chosen to share his photo archives with the public, offering them a glimpse of the private life of the director of L’Aveu, Clair de Femme and Missing, and a behind-the-scenes look at his film sets, with candid shots of their stars: Yves Montand, Simone Signoret, Romy Schneider and Dominique Blanc. Costa Gavras opens up his family album and allows us to discover these faces that feel so familiar.
