Fifteen authors reveal the importance that Joaquín Sorolla had on the photographers of his time.
This exhibition aims to reconstruct the creative universe of Joaquín Sorolla, and the Spanish cultural and artistic scene between the 1868 revolution and Primo de Rivera’s dictatorship – the historical boundaries that frame the painter’s lifetime. His prominence as an artistic figure and his condition as a genius and a national celebrity made him the subject of many photographs and linked him to the most reputed professional of his time, who captured him in his studios, with his family and in every facet of his life.
Photography and those who make it happen enjoy a special place in this display, given the high quality of the portraits and stories gathered for this occasion which bring us closer to the artist but also to the most relevant moments of the history of Spanish photography and the evolution of the photographic language evidenced in the transition from the so-called cartes de visite to the exaltation of photographic portraiture and the emergence of photojournalism in parallel with the rise of illustration in the media.
