Jonathan Alpeyrie‘s book, Titans, about veterans of the Second World War, has been released by Photo Album Universal. Here is the accompanying text:
Titans is a photographic tribute to World War II veterans, capturing the faces and stories of 40 individuals from 20 different countries. My journey to meet, photograph, and interview these veterans was both challenging and personal. Beginning in 2004 while based in Santa Barbara, I initially focused on American veterans. However, I soon expanded my project to include veterans from various European nations, seeking to portray a more global perspective of the war . This expansion led me to meet individuals from countries such as Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Croatia. Notably, he encountered survivors of the Ustaša movement in Zagreb, Croatia, who had joined forces with the Axis powers for political reasons.
I therefore faced significant challenges in gaining the trust of some veterans, especially those who had fought for the Axis powers. For instance, I met members of the Waffen-SS, a group that is often difficult to approach due to the stigma associated with their involvement . To overcome these obstacles, I collaborated with embassies and veteran associations, sometimes spending over a year to convince individuals to participate in his project . My commitment to understanding their experiences led to in-depth interviews, providing a comprehensive view of their wartime roles and personal reflections.
