Preview

Hamburg Triennale presents a retrospective of work by Phillip Toledano, “When Man Falls” at the House of Photography, Deichtorhallen Hamburg  June 18th – September 6th 2015. The Day will Come is the title of the 2015 Hamburg Triennale which launches its new website this week. Under the direction of curator Krzysztof Candrowicz, the festival’s main focus will look at the future.

“Man Will Fall”, this retrospective of works by Phillip Toledano at House of Photography, Deichtorhallen Hamburg is the central exhibition of this next edition of the Triennale. The exhibition will feature excerpts from his series; “Bankrupt” (2001 – 2003), “Days with My Father” (2006 – 2009), “A New Kind of Beauty” (2008 – 2010), and two new bodies of work; “When I was Six” (2013 – 2014) and “Confrontations” (2012 to present).

Widely known for his humorous, personal and often poignant collections of photographs, Phillip Toledano is also recognized for his imaginative editorial work. He believes that photographs should be like unfinished sentences: There should always be space for questions.

The two new bodies of work included in this survey of Toledano’s oeuvre; “When I was Six”, in which the artist digs deep into the memories of his sister who died tragically when he was six. Toledano documents the long kept remembrances he discovered of her after his mother died.  He juxtaposes these personal momentos with his fascination for science fiction, which blossomed at the same time as his sister’s passing. In “Confrontations” Toldedano confronts mortality, this time through his own ageing process. After visiting fortune tellers and doctors for possible predictions of his future health and wellbeing he contemplates potential personas as he might appear 30 – 40 years into the future, with sometimes humorous and even horrifying results.

Born in London to a French Moroccan mother, and an American Father, Phillip is presently based in New York, where he lives with his wife and daughter.  His work varies in medium, from photography to installation.  His photographs have been exhibited in Poland, Ireland, Australia, and the Netherlands, as well as featured at Unseen Photo Fair and Paris Photo in 2013.  His work has appeared in Vanity Fair, The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, GQ, Wallpaper and The London Times amongst others.

Phillip Toledano is represented by East Wing (www.east-wing.org).

Publications of his new work, “When I Was Six” and “Confrontations”, will be published in the spring of 2015 by Dewi Lewis (UK).
