Sheltering in Place and Dreaming of Japan
COVID-19, stay-at-home orders, curfews, riots, and the difficulty or inability to travel has made it hard for me, both physically and emotionally, to shoot photographs. This led me to return to images I took in the past, and in particular, I was drawn to photographs I took during many trips to Japan made over a number of years. This series reflects my yearning for a life where we all will be able again to safely visit friends and family, to travel, and to go to places we’ve never been or return to places we have been before and to which we long to return. There is also in some of these images a nod to all the great Japanese photographers of the mid to late twentieth century whose work I deeply admire.
