Paris : Zeng Nian, Retour en Chine

Preview

La Compagnie Française de l’Orient et de la Chine is holding an exhibition dedicated to black and white panoramic photographs by the French artist of Chinese origin, Zeng Nian. This exhibition is designed in collaboration with the sponsorship of Emerige.

The work of Zeng Nian brings together the evidence of photojournalism and aestheticism of artistic photography.  His photographic compositions are inspired by Chinese printmaking in their panoramic format, which enables his photos to emphasize vertical or horizontal lines, and also by Chinese landscape painting.

Zeng Nian gives testimony to the social and cultural realities of  rapidly evolving China.  He tirelessly shows scenes of daily life in his country of origin.  For twenty years, he also photographed the Three Gorges Dam.  Three Gorges is constituted of narrow passes, hollowed for seventy million years, across the Daba Mountains, in which meander the dangerous streams of the longest river in China, the Yangtze River.  For millenniums, these landscapes, made famous by many artists, have been a symbol of the richness and the romanticism of the Chinese civilization.  In 1944, the Chinese government decided to construct, in this area, the biggest dam in the world.  Today, a technological feat was certainly achieved, but one and a half million people were displaced.  Cities and villages were swallowed by a lake of 54,000 km2, and the site was forever transformed.
