Paris : Marcel Hartmann, Moments

Preview

From  June 18th, Anne-Dominique Toussaint will be present Moments, an exhibition of photographer Marcel Hartmann’s work at Galerie Cinema.

Marcel Hartmann knows the world of cinema inside out. He knows the actors, the sets and what goes on behind the scenes. He is often called the photographer of the stars but first and foremost, as he says himself, he was born before the big screen. To coincide with the 69th Festival de Cannes, which Marcel has covered numerous times, this is a chance to explore his universe and his inspirations.

He started his photography career in the shadow of some of the greats, first as an assistant to Dominique Isserman then Richard Avedon, Irving Penn and Peter Lindbergh. In 1992, Hartmann started to photograph personalities for prestigious magazines and brands such as Vogue, L’Optimum, Vanity Fair, Officiel, Rolex and IBM. Very quickly, he specialised in portraiture. Setting aside his technical expertise, what gives his images such force and appeal is his ability to establish a sense of close friendship with his models.

His photographs are anything but rigid portraits. Instead, they are natural, one-off images that reveal a different side of his famous models. Behind the textures, light and very careful staging, the actors somehow surrender to Hartmann’s lens, losing themselves to the point of being sometimes barely recognisable.
