The first edition of PHOTOFAIRS | San Francisco opens on January 27th. We decided to dedicate two days to the event. Here is the presentation of the fair by its creative cirector, Alexandre Montague-Sparey.
We are honored to bring to San Francisco — a city so heavily synonymous with the photographic medium — a very refreshing, focused and cutting-edge international edit of some of the best opportunities available in the market at this time. In a very nurturing, boutique context, this new platform aims to highlight the wonders of the medium both aesthetically and intellectually, whilst underlining it as a tantalizing opportunity for both the new and seasoned collector.
PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai and San Francisco are today synonymous with the opportunity to discover new collectable contemporary artists who dedicate their practice to photography and moving image, alongside established names.
The handpicked works presented in both destinations celebrate fresh and relevant material at the regional and international level. At the first edition of PHOTOFAIRS | San Francisco, I am excited to put that spotlight on the West Coast, alongside European and Asian artists never seen in the Bay area and who present especially interesting opportunities in the market at this time.
Why did we choose San Francisco over other American cities? San Francisco has been selected as PHOTOFAIRS’ second destination for its strong photographic legacy. Long regarded as a leading international center for photography, San Francisco is arguably today the most important city in the country for the medium, alongside New York.
Photography and photography collecting is in the DNA of San Francisco. From the f.64 Group in the 1930s all the way to the brand new Pritzker Center for Photography at SFMOMA, San Francisco has always been very respectful and celebratory of photography as a medium, at the highest level.
Alexander Montague-Sparey is the Creative Director of PHOTOFAIRS.
Enabling collectors and audiences to engage with living contemporary artists is a key element of PHOTOFAIRS. The San Francisco fair’s public program will bring together experts from across the industry and give collectors access to museum-quality exhibitions. The program includes Conversations, a rigorous and relevant series of talks drawing on key themes and ideas seen throughout the fair, as well as Insights, a curated exhibited offering unique pieces for private sale.
PHOTOFAIRS is dedicated to presenting fine art photography and moving image from leading international galleries and their artists in dynamic and cutting-edge destinations around the world.
In its highly curated approach, PHOTOFAIRS provides an elegant and vibrant environment for both seasoned and new collectors. In addition, tailored VIP and public programs are designed to create an engaging platform for our international audience.
Fair destinations include PHOTOFAIRS | San Francisco, launching January 27-29, 2017 in the Festival Pavilion at the Fort Mason Center and the fourth edition of PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai, September 8-10, 2017 at the Shanghai Exhibition Center.
The two annual shows engage collectors across Asia-Pacific and the Pacific Rim: Shanghai, in the heart of Asia and San Francisco, the West Coast center for photography.
