Oana Ivan Gallery : Gilles Bensimon

Preview

Until October 4, Oana Ivan Gallery presents an exhibition by Gilles Bensimon. It brings together some fifty works created between 1986 and 2021.

A photographer of women, but especially for women, he liberated the image of the female body without ever making it an object. He celebrates strong, independent, radiant figures, revealed in their intensity. He profoundly reinvented the way we photograph women: neither a fixed icon nor a simple muse, but a partner in a creative vision. His work is an ode to allure, to intimacy, to the moment.

“Women have given me everything,” he says. For him, a portrait must be a discovery, retaining a dark side. His ambition: to take “photos that are timeless, but that also say something about the moment.” A quest he pursues with relentless rigor, often tinged with doubt: “I am never entirely satisfied with my photos.” Perhaps it is this dissatisfaction that drives him to go further, to take more photographs, to never stop. When asked what his favorite photo is, he replies: “It’s the one I’ll make tomorrow.”
