Note Note Éditions : Guillaume Blot : French Fries

Preview

Note Note Éditions presents Note Note Collection, a distinctive publishing project that tells, in images, the more or less recurring obsessions of contemporary photographers in their work. Each issue features one photographer, invited to take over the entire pagination to share a favorite theme, an object close to their heart, or someone dear to them, in a way that may be funny and absurd, or serious and solemn.

For this fifth issue, Guillaume Blot celebrates a simple and universal passion: French fries, that taste of sharing that awakens memories. From Sunday chicken to teenage outings at McDonald’s, from the Stade de la Beaujoire to the smell of frying that lingers on a T-shirt at the kebab shop, from the tray at a demonstration to the generous portions at the truck-stop restaurant, all the way to those eaten after a night out: naturally, French fries have always been everywhere.

For 10 years, Guillaume Blot crisscrossed France to capture this popular, convivial and festive ritual that is the French fry. From his encounter with Jean-Paul Dambrine, owner of the Sensas fry stands, to his visit to the fresh-fries producer Pom’Lorette.

The world of French fries was already part of Guillaume Blot’s work from his first project, Buvettes (2015), in which he roamed the fry stands of stadiums across the country. He returned to it, even more deliberately, in the series Rades and Restos routiers, devoted to tours of bistros and to those lively places where people eat, laugh and talk loudly, together.

True to his tender and curious gaze on the poetry of everyday life, Guillaume Blot offers here an ode to sharing and to those moments of simple joy when pleasure becomes collective. A sincere, almost childlike joy — that of simply being there.
