New York : AIPAD 2013 –by Jonas Cuénin

When Spring is in the air, photo festivals are never far behind. For its 33rd edition, the annual art fair organized by the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) is focusing on youth by featuring the work of many emerging talents. From April 4 – 7, 2013, photography amateurs and professionals will come together at the Park Avenue Armory in New York for one of the year’s major festivals. Eighty of the world’s most highly rated galleries will be exhibiting, six of them for the first time at AIPAD: the Brancolini Grimaldi in London, Fifty One Fine Art Photography, the Klompching Gallery in Brooklyn, the M97 Gallery in Shanghai, the New York-based P.P.O.W. and Sage Paris.

Among the countless artists on display, of particular interest will be: James Welling at David Zwirner; Damion Berger at the Lisa Sette Gallery; the series Smoking Kids by the Belgian artist Frieke Janssens, at the Catherine Edelman gallery from Chicago; portraits by Martha Wilson, Carolee Schneemann and David Wojnarowicz at the P.P.O.W.; the series Nursery Rhymes by Yu Xiao at the 798 Photo Gallery from Beijing; Luo Dan portraits at the M97 Gallery from Shanghai; Stephen Wilkes presented by the Monroe Gallery of Photography from Santa Fe; the work of Matthew Brandt at New York’s Yossi Milo Gallery; and, finally, Howard Greenberg’s selection of Edward Burtynsky. It’s impossible to ignore the rise to prominence of the portrait, a genre of photography ubiquitous in today’s Western visual culture, from magazines to art galleries.

Four panel discussions have been organized for Saturday, April 6. The topics will be the changing art photography market, the emerging Los Angeles photo scene, photo criticism and the evolution of American color photography.

Prices at this year’s fair are as high as ever and show no signs of dropping. In the past few years, several photographs have sold for over a million dollars, and this year will almost certainly not be an exception. However, it’s still possible to purchase an art print for as low as a few hundred dollars. Whether visitors come to purchase or simply to peruse, AIPAD remains a beautiful showcase of the history of photography.
