Mumbai 2013 –Mumbai Focus Festival

Preview

The first edition of the Focus Festival for photography will be held in Mumbai from March 13 to 27. Founders Matthieu Foss, Elise Foster Vander Elst and Nikola Antaki provided us with an overview of the festival.

The purpose of Focus is to bring together a large number of places and people involved with photography in Mumbai. “We were directly inspired by the Month of Photography in Paris,” says Foss.

Photography will be on display in venues across Mumbai: fifteen galleries in the city’s southern tip, foreign cultural institutions like the Alliance Française and the Goethe Institut, and public Indian institutions like the Jehangir Art Gallery and the NPCA. Shops throughout the city will also host exhibitions, workshops, discussions and screenings.

Two major exhibitions in the program are A Fantastic Legacy, examining the golden age of Mumbai photography, from 1850 to 1890, and The City Seen by Women Photographers.

Although the photography market in Mumbai and Delhi has struggled in recent years, organizing events to promote photography remains indispensable, not only for people working in the profession, but for the public as well.
